Farley’s Finds: Film, Food & Favorites – November 11

Farley’s Finds: Film, Food and Favorites is a weekly series where I share with you what I love, what is deserving of a toast of whiskey, where I’ll be (events) and what I’m looking forward to this upcoming week. It’s sounds totally self-centered, but REALLY it’s because I stumble on some really amazing things other people are doing and I want to share them with you. So there!

Being that it is Veterans Day, a massive, genuine, heartfelt thank you to all those that have served our country.

I gotta give it up to where I work for hosting a super impressive festival last weekend. The inaugural azcentral.com Food and Wine Experience was classy, fun and packed full of delicious food from top local restaurants, incredible demonstrations by some of the nation’s best and most famous chefs, a plethora of booths to sample wine, beer and spirits and even fashion models who dressed up like water faucets. Yep. And while I didn’t personally attend any of the private meals with a chef, I hear it was a really unique and amazing time. Definitely looking forward to next year and going bigger and better!

I had the pleasure of emceeing the demo stage and got to meet Graham Elliot fr...

I have officially taken down the Halloween decorations, busted out the winter clothes and am patiently waiting to put up my tree until the day after Christmas per my cohabiter’s request.

I have been allotted the task of booking a Santa Claus for an event coming up and I stumbled upon something called gigsalad.com. It’s pretty freaking awesome. They have entertainers, actors, models, santas, clowns and all sorts of people on the site. You put in your booking information and they literally bid by sending you quotes to get the gig. It really is a brilliant concept and I wish I had known about his earlier. I wonder if they have DJ’s on there? Oh and photographers?! This is just so exciting and wickedly convenient...

It might not be too pretty to look at or glamourous with a Starbucks inside, but Gardner’s Book Service is a treasure for any teachers, librarians, educators or folks like me who volunteer reading to kids. They have a plethora of book titles appropriate for a wide range of grade levels and sell them at wholesale cost. It is Westside off of 23rd Ave. and Bell, but it’s worth the trip. True to their name, they do offer different professional services such as binding and meeting space.

The evenings in Arizona are getting pretty darn lovely and after seeing a patio setup in Ikea of all places, I am inspired to create a little outdoor fairy cove of my own to enjoy. Basically for me, if it has twinkle lights then it’s pretty safe I’m going to love it. Here’s some looks that spark my fancy:

There’s an Instagram feed called Two Humans Travel, actually, they have a full website too. I wish  hadn’t discovered that because it’s developing into an unhealthy addiction, but the site is really great.  Basically it’s about a photographer and a writer who travel around the world and make really beautiful things together. Talk about a dream life right?! So if you have an interest in travel or photography or you know, cool things around the globe in general – you’ll have a grand time exploring their stuff. Who knows, you might even get inspired to pack a bag and go have an adventure of your own!

Just in time for Halloween, although I’d no doubt rock these any time of the ...

I’m not a vegetarian or a vegan, I like my meat. However, I did see a video of a little baby pig the other day that may have ruined bacon for me. But, eating healthy is a high priority for me right now and one place that I know I can get a good meal that is good for me is Green New American. The crab puffs and the coconut curry bowl are two of my go-tos when I’m there. They have some pretty scrumptious sweet treats too. This is one place where I can truly indulge in a hearty meal without feeling guilty!

Pat Shannahan and I have started a video series called ‘Totally AZ’ for azcentral.com and The Republic. We have a passion for exploring the state we live in and want to share the unique experiences that y...

My girl Sarah Haywood insisted that I try this place and I am so glad she did! Zookz is know for “sandwiches with an edge” and I couldn’t have said it better myself. My dad always loved sandwiches, I had always preferred pasta myself thinking that sammiches weren’t exactly the most sophisticated or tasty of foods, but Zookz totally blows all of my thoughts on sandwich limitations away! It’s right downtown, yummy and quick! Best thing you’ll put in your mouth all day, I promise 😉

I don’t know who would have thunk it, but the Phoenix Symphony is getting hip! Their season lineup includes everything from a Star Wars themed night to the music of cinematic score genius John Williams to a super heroes themed night and a Harry Potter Halloween at Hogwarts. I keep buying individual tickets, bu...

Sundays may be a designated day of rest, but it is also a day or pork. Heavenly Bakeshop and Catering makes whole suckling pig  or Lechon on Sundays and you can buy it by the pound or in a plate with white rice. It is super tasty and the complex is mainly Filipino so every time we walk in the owner gets excited and takes our picture to post on Facebook to show all of her friends and family that she got a non-Filipino customer. It’s a great family-run business and the food is incredible.

So if you’ve tried to remain in denial that the digital age has not revolutionized or impacted our concept of fame, celebrity or even talent, then I’m sorry to say that you’re about to get hit over the head with reality...

I’m writing this at lunch ergo I am hungry, ergo I shall start with food. If you live in the East Valley and are a even a mildly adventurous eater, I highly, strongly, absolutely recommend popping into Lee’s Sandwiches off of Warner and Dobson in Chandler. It’s a large shop specializing in Asian and European cuisine. It is also a bakery where they make some of the best baguettes I’ve ever had and a market! The BBQ pork sandwich (Special #6) is my ultimate fave, but it is not ordinary BBQ pork just FYI. They take cash only. Give a try!

It’s a known fact I work for the media and a lot of digital organizations are trying to understand the online behaviors of millennials right now. It is a painstaking journey...

There’s a documentary on Netflix right now called ‘Casting By’ which goes in to the history of the evolution of the role of casting directors and some of the most revolutionary CD’s in the industry that helped pave the way and literally completely change the dynamic of film and the future of actors. There’s some great interview segments with actors talking about getting their first big role as well as a lot of historical accounts that are simply enlightening. I highly suggest you give it a watch!

Just got back from a trip to Disneyland (super hot in LA btw) and I saw this shirt that I absolutely became obsessed with. Hunted it down and found an Instagram account for Shop Lunamar or you can visit their online store here. Basically they specialize in fantasy apparel, especially the mermaid princess shirt with two seashells over your … ummm … bubbies. So cute!

On this trip to Disney, it was my first time checking out the D23 Expo and allow me to just say that as a hardcore, lifetime Disney fan I was completely blown away! They had an exhibit on the history of Disneyland from their archive collections, artist demos, video game demos, meet and greets with celebs, shopping, photo opps and pretty much anything your Disney-loving heart could ever desire...
